Su obra ha recorrido más de diez festivales alrededor del mundo y ha sido premiada en tres ediciones del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM). Por Toro negro (2005) obtuvo, entre otros, el premio a Mejor Largometraje Documental en el 3° FICM y en el 27° Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana. Con su ópera prima, Alamar (2009), obtuvo el premio a Mejor Largometraje Mexicano y el Premio del Público en el 7° FICM; el Tiger Award a Mejor Película en el 39° Festival Internacional de Cine de Rotterdam (IFFR por sus siglas en inglés); y el New Directors Award en el 53° Festival Internacional de Cine de San Francisco (SFIFF por sus siglas en inglés); entre otros reconocimientos. Su documental Inori (2012) ganó el premio a Mejor Largometraje Documental en el 10° FICM y el Leopardo de Oro en el 65° Festival Internacional de Cine de Locarno, Suiza.
