Su obra ha recorrido más de 100 festivales alrededor del mundo, entre ellos seis ediciones del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM). En el 1er FICM se proyectó su cortometraje de ficción La suerte de la fea… a la bonita no le importa (2002). En el 2° FICM, dentro de la sección de la Semana de la Crítica, se presentó su ópera prima Temporada de patos (2004), ganadora de once premios Ariel, incluyendo el de Mejor Película, en la 47ª entrega de los premios Ariel, México. Temporada de patos también recibió el premio a Mejor Película en el 19° American Film Institute’s AFI Fest, Los Ángeles; y nueve premios Mayahuel en el 18° Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara (FICG). Lake Tahoe (2008), su segundo largometraje de ficción, se estrenó en el 6° FICM y obtuvo el premio a Mejor Película en la 51ª entrega de los premios Ariel y en el 23° Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara (FICG). En el 8° FICM estrenó el largometraje de ficción, en colaboración con varios directores, Revolución (2010), que participó, entre otros festivales, en la 49ª Semana de la Crítica, y obtuvo el premio Abrazo a Mejor Largometraje y el Premio del Sindicato Francés de la Crítica de Cine en el 19° Festival de Biarritz de Cine y Culturas de América Latina, Francia. Formó parte de la Selección Oficial del 11° FICM con su tercer largometraje de ficción Club Sándwich (2013), que obtuvo tres nominaciones, a Mejor Película, Mejor Director y Mejor Actriz para María René Prudencio, en la 56ª entrega de los premios Ariel. Ha ganado, por este último, el Premio a Mejor Película en el 31° Festival de Cine de Torino (TFF por sus siglas en inglés), Italia; la Mejor Narrativa en el 45° Festival de Cine de Nashville, Tennessee; y la Concha de Plata al Mejor Director en el 61° Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián. Se realizó una retrospectiva del realizador en el 51° Festival de Cine de Nueva York (NYFF por sus siglas en inglés), organizado por The Film Society of Lincoln Center. En el 12º FICM se celebraron los 10 años de su ópera prima Temporada de patos y se exhibió su cortometraje de ficción Disculpe las molestias (1994), dentro de la celebración de los 20 años de las Jornadas de Cortometraje Mexicano.
