In the opinion of Geoff Andrew of the British Film Institute, it is “a marvelous film that told the story of an elementary school teacher and the way he teaches children of diverse ages in the same group.” He also describes the films of Philibert as being philosophical, without ever becoming dull. After the screening of Être et avoir, Philibert talked about how for him there is no difference between documentary and fiction film, as both forms are so complete –whether by depicting reality or by storytelling, its possibilities are infinite. “The greatness of a film lies in its subject, in the writing and the form in which it is told,” he said.
