Nicolás Pereda part of the jury at Film Festival Locarno

The Film Festival Locarno is one of the most important international cinematographic events. In its 66th edition, which will take place from August 7 to 17, Mexican filmmaker Nicolás Pereda will be part of the jury. Mexican cinema will also be represented at Locarno by two productions in competition.

Pereda has participated at FICM in four occasions. In 2007 his opera prima ¿Dónde están sus historias? received the award for Best Mexican Feature Film; in 2008 his documentary short film Entrevista con la tierra was part of the Official Selectiom; his docu-fiction Verano de Goliat, was premiered at a special screening at FICM in 2010 and, most recently, his fiction film Los mejores temas was presented by the director at the 2012 FICM.

Pereda’s work has been shown in festivals such as Cannes, Rotterdam and San Sebastian. He has also made films and videos for interdisciplinary projects in theater, dance and opera. Now the Film Festival Locarno recognizes the talent of this Mexican filmmaker by inviting him to be part of the jury of the Concorso Cineasti del Presente, composed of 16 first and second films.

More than searching for formal perfection, this section of Locarno rewards freshness and experimentation. The Concorso Cineasti del Presente celebrates the constant renovation of film and discovers new talents. Nicolás Pereda will share the responsibility of being a juror with the filmmakers Hartmut Bitomsky (who will preside over the jury), Tine Fischer, Daniele Gaglianone and Peaches. His film Perpetuum Mobile (2009) will be screened at Locarno as part of the I film delle giurie (the films of the jury) section.

The Concorso Cineasti del Presente section includes the Mexican feature film Los insólitos peces gato, Claudia Sainte-Luce’s opera prima, which will have its world premiere at Locarno.

The co-production between Peru, France and Mexico, El mudo by Daniel and Diego Vega, will also premiere at Locarno. This film will be part of the Concorso internazionale, featuring 20 works by young directors who are already well-known to festival-goers.
