Toro Negro won the Horizontes Prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival, and the Best Documentary from Mexico at the FICM. David R. Romeo, the film’s producer, said he was honored by the fact that Mexican audiences had liked the film.

What did the film give you??A great deal of satisfaction, because we managed to portray El Negro’s life without judging it. The film contains an interesting message, and people take to it.

How did audiences in Morelia react?
It was good; it was the best question and answer session we had, along with this first screening at the Cineteca. Even better that the questions we got at San Sebastian and Toronto, because the questions where interesting, people here identify more easily with the film, that’s why the feedback is richer. Winning at San Sebastian was an honor, but for people in Mexico to like the film, who are the ones in touch with this reality, is priceless, I swear to God. It’s strange sometimes, you know, Reygadas is very popular in France but he’s too controversial here in Mexico, commercially speaking.

Which other festivals will your film be at?
This year, it will be at the Three Continent Festival. Next year Sarajevo, Ambulante and maybe four or five more festivals, they haven’t confirmed yet, so I can’t tell you for sure.
