Margarita Zavala visits FICM

Zavala walked the red carpet accompanied by FICM organizers President Alejandro Ramírez Magaña and Director Daniela Michel. Meyer and the film’s actors also attended the red carpet event, arriving ahead of Zavala.

Ramírez thanked Zavala for coming and noted that in past years she has taken an interest in seeing the work of emerging Mexican directors.

Meyer, who won Best Short Film for El Pasajero at FICM 2004, thanked Zavala, Ramírez and Michel for coming and said: “This screening is also very special because the actors are here, and they are incredible people. I want to dedicate this screening to them, because they are truly the soul of this movie. I learned a lot from them.”

The director, who also competed in the 2009 FICM with his El Calambre, added that none of the actors are professionals; they are all farmworkers from the states of Jalisco and Zacatecas.

“Beginning with the research that I did on the Christeros, I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to work with professional actors. I realized that I needed people who knew the land, who could lend their magnificent faces and an energy that I think is the true energy of the Christero movement.”
