LATIDO by Katina Medina Mora: A Glimpse Into Infertility

Estefanía Zúñiga

Fifteen years ago, Katina Medina Mora was in Morelia as a production assistant. This time she visits the 21st Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) as a director premiering her film Latido (2023), accompanied by actresses Marina de Tavira and Camila Calónico, producer Inna Payan, and director of photography Nur Rubio Sherwel.

The film tells the story of 45-year-old Leonor, who has tried everything to get pregnant but her body does not seem to respond. Emilia, a 16-year-old teenager with an undeniable talent for ballet, sees her career cut short the day she learns she is pregnant. The two will make a deal and go through the pregnancy process together.

Katina shared that her work on motherhood emerges from two points on the same spectrum: on one hand, the profound desire to become a mother and, on the other, an event that can destroy the life of a woman, a teenage girl in this case. She added that the film touches on complex issues such as infertility, which many women, unfortunately, go through all alone.

The filmmaker wrote the story with only Marina de Tavira in mind, and describes her as "the best Mexican actress of her generation." The actress said it was a very interesting process, which allowed her to prepare through testimonies and literature, adding that "characters and acting is the way to get to know the world."

Working with a mostly female crew was a joy for Nur Rubio, who describes that she formed a family bond with the cast, and they managed to achieve a remarkable synergy throughout filming. Finally, Inna Payan, founder of Animal de Luz Films, added that "at the end of the day, films are also our children," making reference to the film itself.
