With Daniela Michel, founder and general director of FICM, and the journalist and film critic Anne Wakefield Hoyt in attendance, Robin Miller Ungar thanked the Morelia Film Festival for the invitation and explained that the idea for the documentary came about after a trip to Cuba where they heard Vocal Vidas and decided to share their story. "A lot of our life experiences come from traveling." Robin Miller Ungar When the group Vocal Vidas, an exclusively female Cuban a capella quartet, is invited to play in the United States, a simple concert becomes a journey across physical and ideological borders that affirms the connecting powers of music. Soy cubana is a documentary that addresses the art of singing and acting, as well as the political climate and the lives of four women who have sacrificed a lot to keep singing together. "With the film, they will experience this journey of serendipity, a very fortunate encounter with an uncertain ending, but ultimately, that's life," added Miller Ungar. Anne Wakefield recalled that Soy cubana started her journey in Morelia, in 2017, when it was presented in an early short film version.
