Jytte Jensen has been with The Museum of Modern Art since 1984 where she organizes international retrospectives, national surveys, retrospectives of individual international artists, as well as programs of experimental and independent American cinema, and thematic series. At MoMA, she has organized annual programs such as Premiere Brazil!, ContemporAsian, and Global Lens, as well as Prix Jean Vigo (2006), a yearlong celebration of French film; mid-career focus exhibitions on contemporary auteurs like Carlos Reygadas (Mexico); Cao Guimarães (Brazil); Jia Zhang-ke (China), and retrospectives of films starring Asta Nielsen (“The Tenth Muse”) (1996), and Delphine Seyrig (2002); surveys of Chinese cinema (Bright Stars, Big City: Chinese Cinema’s First Golden Era, 1922-1937 [2005]) and that of the former Soviet-Union (A Salute to the Soviet Republics [1986]). She has organized retrospectives of contemporary masters: Béla Tarr: Tango, Hungarian Style (2001), Abbas Kiarostami: Image Maker (2007), Milos Forman (February, 2008), Bernardo Bertolucci (December, 2010), and Pier Paolo Pasolini (2012); as well as Big as Life: An American History of 8mm Films (1998-99, with Steve Anker); and (co-curated with Rasha Salti) a three part program of films from the Middle East (Mapping Subjectivity: Experimentation in Arab Cinema from the 1960s to Now [2010-2012]). Ms. Jensen has curated gallery installations at MoMA with artists such as Abbas Kiarostami, Ken Jacobs, and Ernie Gehr. She is a member of the selection committee for New Directors/New Films. Ms. Jensen holds an M.A. in Cinema Studies from New York University. Her publications include: Benjamin Christensen: An International Dane (1999), “Four Decades of Brazilian Cinema” in Cinema Novo and Beyond (1998), and monographs on Carl Th. Dreyer (1994) and Béla Tarr (2001) as well as interviews and articles for newspapers in the U.S. and abroad. She serves on several boards as well as on many grant and funding panels and has contributed programming to several festivals and art institutions internationally. Ms. Jensen has participated on several international festival juries including those of the Oberhausen, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Guadalajara, CPH / DOX, and Sundance film festivals.
