“I wish I could be with you in person tonight. This film was born in 2008 when I was a guest writer on Saturday Night Live,” the director explained. Reitman explained that he had the opportunity to write sketches for the show and wanted to share what that “thrilling and terrifying” experience was like in his film.

Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to Saturday Night Live's first broadcast at 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, 1975, when a fierce group of young comedians and writers changed television, and the culture, forever.

“My co-writer and I interviewed every human being who came through the show since 1975, every writer and actor, anyone who could share what it was like to be there, and we wanted to bring all these stories together into one experience in 90 minutes,” Reitman expanded in his video message.
