THE INVITATION “Came to me and I Accepted It”: Fabrizio Maltese at the 20th FICM

Gustavo R. Gallardo

The Italian director Fabrizio Maltese presented his film The Invitation (2022), at the 20th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival, with the presence of the festival's director, Daniela Michel.

In The Invitation, Maltese accepts an invitation from the Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako to continue a film that he started with Pol Cruchten, who passed away. Thus, the project acquires a new symbolic dimension, but while Maltese travels alone to meet the director, fate has something else in store for them.

"Thank you all for coming, I'm very happy to be here in Morelia, in this room, with all of you [...] This film came to me and I just accepted it," said the director, who then added, "Based on my experience, Morelia's audience is the best audience in the world”.

Fabrizio Maltese said that when directors Abderrahmane Sissako and Pol Cruchten met, there was "an immediate spark between the two, a strong bond, and they decided they wanted to do something together, but life took a different path and I ended up making that movie that it became my film.”
