The II Sexual Diversity Program kicked off at the 15th FICM

For the second consecutive year the Sexual Diversity Program, which brings together the vision of several Mexican filmmakers who have focused on this issue, was presented. The works of fiction, documentary and animation that are part of the program confirm the need to continue addressing painful issues such as loss, abuse and diversity from different perspectives.

The presentation was attended by Alejandro Ramírez, president of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM); Lorena Guillé, director of Fundación Cinépolis; Bartholomew Sammut, Director of XPOSED International Queer Film Festival; as well as the directors and actors of the short films in the program.

"Talking about sexual diversity may seem for many a foreign issue, difficult to address or too progressive for our country or, even more so, for a city like Morelia. However, until we can shed light on it, we will continue to allow discrimination and attack, through silence, the full exercise of the rights of millions of people who could be your friends, brothers, sisters, colleagues, armchair neighbors or oneself. A society that allows spaces of segregation does not suit anybody," said Lorena Guillé, at the opening of the program.

She added that "the antidote for discrimination is visibility and there is no better platform than the reflectors of this festival, to accompany us to become aware through the cinema," and thanked the programmers, partners and programming committee of the festival.

At the end of the screenings, a Q&A session was held in the presence of directors Pierre Saint Martin, David Muñoz, Diego Cruz Cilveti, Dave Carrioza, Humberto Busto and actors Carlos Montes de Oca and Haydee Leyva.

Finally, Bartholomew Sammut thanked those present for their assistance. "This initiative began when I learned that FICM had a program on sexual diversity and I was very motivated to support them and do everything I could. That is how we finally got here," he concluded.
