Hirokazu Kore-Eda's MONSTER Was Presented as Part of the 21st FICM

Hirokazu Kore-Eda's Monster, winner of the Queer Palm 2023, was presented at the 21st Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) in the presence of Franck Finance-Madureira, president of the award given to LGBTIQ+ films at the Cannes Film Festival.

Also present at the event were Daniela Michel, founder and General Director of FICM, and Alejandro Ramírez, President of the festival, who together with Finance-Madureira announced the open call for film projects for the first edition of the Queer Palm Lab, beginning Friday, November 3, 2023.

The Japanese filmmaker's movie portrays the behavior of young Minato, who causes growing concern. His mother, who has been raising him alone since the death of her husband, decides to confront the school's educational team. Everything seems to point to Minato's teacher as the one responsible for the problems the young boy is suffering, but as the story unfolds through the eyes of the mother, the teacher and the boy, the truth turns out to be much more complex.

About Queer Palm

The Queer Palm was created in 2010 by Finance-Madureira and is an award that recognizes films that stand out for their approach to LGBTQIA+ issues among other films nominated or entered in the Official Selection and in the parallel sections of the Cannes Film Festival, such as the Critics' Week, the Directors' Fortnight or the ACID section.

Since its creation, the Queer Palm has been awarded to memorable and outstanding films that reflect the diversity and importance of the themes addressed by this distinction.

Each year, a jury chooses to recognize, from among the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival and its parallel sections, a short or feature film that deals with LGBTQIA+, feminist, or gender non-conforming characters and stories.
