Congratulations to both of these extraordinarily talented men! Alejandro González Iñárritu and Emmanuel Lubezki at the 2016 Oscars. Images from the AMPAS. In 2015, Alejandro González Iñárritu won Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Script (shared with Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Armando Bo) and Best Film (shared with John Lesher and James W. Skotchdopole) for Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), which was the Opening Film at the 12th edition of FICM. The director, who has been a Special Guest at FICM on three occasions, has also received various awards from different institutions, including Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 for Babel. This year, the Academy has awarded González Iñárritu the award for Best Director for the second year running. At the prize ceremony the director said that he wanted to “make sure for once and forever that the color of the skin becomes as irrelevant as the length of our hair.” This is the third year in a row that Emmanuel Lubezki has won the Oscar for Best Cinematography: in 2015 he won the statuette for Birdman, and in 2014 he won the same award for his work on Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (which was the Opening Film at the 11th FICM). Lubezki has established himself as one of the best cinematographers in the world, and it is a pleasure to see his magnificent work acknowledged once more by the Academy. At the prize ceremony Lubezki said “ The director is author of the movie. I'm lucky to work with these great authors trying to push cinematographic language further…” As well as the awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography, the Academy also honored Leonardo DiCaprio with the Oscar for Best Actor for his work on The Revenant, marking the first time the actor has ever won an Oscar statuette.
