George Ovashvili Presented THE MOON IS A FATHER OF MINE at the 24th FICM

Closing off the seventh day of the 24th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), Georgian director George Ovashvili presented his latest feature film, joined by the festival’s founder and director, Daniela Michel, and Óscar Arce, a member of the Mexican Short Film Selection Committee.

“I would love to speak in Spanish, but I only know a few words. I truly want to thank the organizers of this fantastic festival, and especially Daniela,” Ovashvili remarked before the screening began.

The Moon Is a Father of Mine follows 12-year-old Toma, who is expelled from school after being bullied by his peers. His father, Nemo, whom he is estranged from after he disappeared when Toma was two, invites him to his village. The local residents are not pleased by Nemo’s return, but he is determined to pass on the tradition of deer hunting to his son. The film tells a story of survival, independence, and a father’s dark past.

The director explained how he decided to create this work and discussed the development of the characters: “I had been thinking about this story for quite some time. The core idea was always to explore the relationship between a father and his son. The film is rooted in my own feelings and the relationship I had with my own father when I was a child.”

Regarding the most challenging aspects of the production, Ovashvili shared how he found the young lead actor and what it was like to work with him: “It was difficult because the boy didn’t really want to work; he would get bored, and filming under those conditions is complicated. I found him in the village almost by accident, it was pure chance. He was complaining the whole time, asking when we would be done,” he shared with a laugh. During a Q&A session, the audience expressed their admiration for the film and thanked the filmmaker for his presence at this edition of the FICM.

The film premiered at the 2025 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and has had several special screenings since, including the 2026 Sofia International Film Festival and the 2026 Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival.
