Special screening of Maurice, by James Ivory, at the 17th FICM

As part of the activities of the 17th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), Maurice, by special guest and filmmaker James Ivory had a special screening and, at the end, the director interacted with the audience to answer some questions.

About the process of adapting a novel, Ivory expressed that the writing was closely watched by his co-writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, “in order to reach a real connection with the book”; that is why they were faithful to the novel, “the big scenes of the film are the big scenes in the book, but we did left certain things out that we could not include because the script was already too long. It could have lasted longer.”

About the bad reception of the critics at the time, Ivory mentioned that it could have been the novel itself, not being the best in the literary work of English writer E.M. Forster, “Ruth (co-writer) did not like Maurice because he thought the book was inferior to his other works.”

The filmmaker shared a little about his new project, which is a script for a six-chapter mini series, based on the novel The End of Eddy by French writer Édouard Luois. In words of Ivory the story is “about a gay boy, his miserable family and his struggle to prove to others that he is tough and strong, but fails in the attempt.”
