Flowers in the Desert by José Álvarez

The film, which won Special Mention in the Best Mexican Documentary section at FICM 2009, follows a group of huicholes who want a film made about their religious and social customs. They feel it is vital to pass on their ancestoral culture to new generations to prevent it from being lost over time. They are pilgrims, deer hunters, and they eat peyote and face many challenges in their effort to continue their beliefs and lifestyle.

The documentary also received other prizes: the Kodak Award for Best Latin American Documentary at the Mexico International Festival of Film and Environment in 2011 and in 2010 a Special Mention in the Identity Official Section of the IV Festival of Memory: Iberoamerican Documentary.

Pedro González Rubio directed Alamar (2009), which won the Public's Award and Best Feature Film at the 7th Morelia International Film Festival.

Fernanda Romandía filmed Venus by José Álvarez, Special Mention for Short Documentary at FICM 2006. One year later, she directed Fenix. She was also responsible for the photography in both Fenix as well as Pescador by Daniela Schneider. Both shorts were in the Official Selection of FICM 2007.
