FICM Presents Carmín Tropical at the Sarajevo Film Festival

The award-winning film for Best Mexican Feature Film at the 12th FICM, Carmín tropical (2014) by Rigoberto Perezcano, will be shown at the 21st Sarajevo Film Festival, which will take place from August 14 to 22, 2015. This special screening is part of a partnership between FICM and the Sarajevo Film Festival, in which a winning film of this prestigious event will be presented at the 13th FICM.

Carmín tropical, which was nominated for nine Ariel awards and won the statuette for Best Screenplay, explores gender issues, violence and family ties in a community of transgender women in the state of Oaxaca. Speaking about the opportunity to present his film in Sarajevo, the director said: “Presenting my work in Sarajevo, Russia or Mars… is a privilege for me and, above all, a great honor. What is clearly transcendental and important for me is to reach the hearts and minds of those who see my film. If I am able to touch the viewer in that way, I can say I’m satisfied. That’s what really matters to me when I make films.”

FICM is delighted to strengthen our relationship with the Sarajevo Film Festival. Besides being one of the most important festivals in Europe – with a careful selection of films each year – Sarajevo has a vital position in the film world as the home of the Film Factory, Belá Tarr’s the renowned school, which offers courses in film to talented filmmakers from around the world, including some young Mexicans.

In addition to Carmín tropical, Mexican cinema will be represented in Sarajevo by two other titles: Chronic (2015) by Michel Franco, which won the Best Screenplay award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival; and the short film, The Empty Nest (2015) by Mexican director Marta Hernaiz Pidal, a student of the Film Factory.

The Sarajevo Film Festival is an outstanding example of originality and quality programming for the international film community. Our festivals share a key objective: to promote the work of local filmmakers and, at the same time, celebrate the best of world cinema. We are thrilled to continue working together with this festival, which allows our shared passions to consolidate a continuous and enriching relationship.
