This year, actor Julio Alemán was chosen for this honor. Daniela Michel, director of the festival, awarded him with the most coveted of prizes at the festival, El Ojo, a sculpture created by Javier Marín and a certificate recognizing his longstanding career. The private ceremony took place before a screening of Ismael Rodríguez’s Los hermanos del Hierro, certainly Alemán’s favorite film. He said that it was tough getting the part, as there were 75 actors auditioning up for the role of Martín, and that the director, Rodríguez, and the scriptwriter, Ricardo Garibay, didn’t think that he was the right type for the role. However, due to his insistence and thanks to his being able to prove he could play the part, he got the spot in the film. Alemán became visibly emotional when telling this story to the crowd. The movie was shown from a 35mm copy from the UNAM’s Filmoteca archive, accompanied by an original poster from the Mexican Cinematography Institute (IMCINE). During the homage, the audience was told that a book dedicated to the actor from Morelia, Julio Alemán, had been put together by Roberto Fiesco. The films that make up the homage to the actor Julio Alemán which will be shown at the festival in the next few days are: Amor y sexo; Los hermanos del Hierro; El tunco Maclovio; Patsy, mi amor; S.O.S. Conspiración Bikini and Yvonne. Check the program for times.
