Eimbcke recieves Tequila Tradicional Prize

Yesterday, Santiago Lebrija, head of public relations at Casa Cuervo awarded the “Tequila Tradicional” Prize of 100,000 pesos to Fernando Eimbcke. Eimbcke also received the El Ojo prize, the most coveted award in the festival, from Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, the vice president of the Morelia International Film Festival.

“This is a young prize, well-matched to the spirit of the festival. We would like to thank those who have helped in this and other events and for giving this prize to a director with serious ideas in his career path,” said Cárdenas Batel.

Eimbcke showed the trailer of his most recent production called Lake Tahoe, which has won the FIPRESCI Prize and the Alfred Bauer Prize in Berlin. The director thanked Casa Cuervo for having selected him for the prize; “above all when there is so much talent in Mexico and I am the one chosen, it is an honor. Thank you for all the assistance you have given Mexican film, I think that the power behind brand names like these helps a lot. I also want to thank the Morelia festival for the help they have given Mexican film, without the backing the people who organize the festival give to make sure our films are shown, it would be difficult for them to be seen at all.”

Eimcke also shared how he would invest this money, “the most expensive thing in the world is freedom, and this prize gives me the freedom to write what I want to write or write about what I believe in.”

This is the fourth year that Casa Cuervo has given out this prize at the FICM. Previous recipients were Carlos Carrera, Juan Carlos Rulfo and Carlos Reygadas.
