The Documentary LAS AMAZONAS DE YAXUNAH Premieres at the 22nd FICM

Las Amazonas de Yaxunah, a documentary by Guatemalan filmmaker Alfonso Algara, premiered in Mexico during the 22nd edition of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM).

“I’m a little nervous because it’s our first time presenting it in Mexico. I believe it’s a very honest piece of work that we created from the beginning,” said the director.

For his part, screenwriter Tlatoani Carrera expressed his excitement about presenting the film in Mexico, “especially at such a wonderful festival like Morelia, which has grown thanks to its audience.”

He added that the documentary was filmed in Mexico but “the story is universal.”

Las Amazonas de Yaxunah tells the story of 26 Maya women from the municipality of Yaxcabá in Yucatán, Mexico, who overcame the prevailing machismo in their families and community to form a softball team.
