Carlos Reygadas Returns to FICM with His Most Recent Film HEIL JUPITER !

As part of the 24th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), filmmaker Carlos Reygadas presented his latest feature film, Heil Jupiter!, at a screening held at the Teatro Matamoros, where he was joined by the festival’s founder and general director, Daniela Michel.

Hidden among the granite rocks of an unknown beach, a dark entity spies on two young couples of painters as they defy the morality that fate has bestowed upon them. Their actions will be judged and punished. Within these spaces lies a world suspended on the edge—between social norms and individual identity, human violence and the beauty of the universe.

This film represents the filmmaker's return to the festival after eight years, when he presented Nuestro tiempo (2018) as part of the 16th FICM.

"Originally the film was called Estela de sombra, but we all know that in the past 20 years the world has become a little darker, I don't know. Everyone is so busy, we don't have time for leisure, and nobody has enough. It's really difficult to earn a salary that allows a slightly more relaxed life," Reygadas explained.

The filmmaker reflected and shared his concern about hypersecurity, hypervigilance, and the accelerated advancement of social control technologies such as facial recognition and voice identification technologies, which for him represents the birth of a new era, which he seeks to reflect with this film.

The director announced that Heil Jupiter! is expected to hit theaters in 2027.
