Share with twitter Share with facebook Share with mail Copy to clipboard In a ceremony hosted by actor Neil Patrick Harris, the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the 2015 Oscar Awards. We are delighted to report that the extraordinary film that opened the 12th FICM last year – Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) – won four Oscars, including Best Film. Congratulations to the director and his exceptional team! González Iñárritu also received the Oscar for Best Original Script, a prize that he shared with Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr and Armando Bo, as well as the Best Director Award, which last year was awarded to Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity (the Opening Film for the 11th edition of FICM). He shared the Oscar for Best Film with John Lesher and James W. Skotchdopole. The Mexican filmmaker, who has been a Special Guest at FICM on three separate occasions, has received many prizes and acknowledgements for his work, including Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival (for Babel in 2006) and the Vanguard Leadership Award from the Sundance Institute, which he will receive in June 2015 for his originality and creative vitality. This is the first time that González Iñárritu has won an Oscar, however, and we think it’s about time! Yet another reason to celebrate – Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki won the Oscar for Best Photography, also for Birdman. This is the second year in a row that Lubezki has walked away with the prize, which he won last year for his work on Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. During his career, Lubezki has established himself as one of the best cinematographers in the world, and it is testament to his talent that the Academy has recognized him for the second consecutive year. We are also happy to announce that Ida, directed by Pawel Pawlikowski – a Guest of Honor at the 12th edition of FICM last year – won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Don’t miss our interview with the director, which you can find: here. Well done to all of the winners for this great acknowledgement of your work!
