García Bernal presented his feature to a packed audience at the Miramar Theater, where Amores Perros premiered seven years ago. The screening was attended by the likes of Walter Salles, Carlos Reygadas, and Spanish actor Javier Bardem. Déficit tells the story of Cristóbal, the son of a corrupt Mexican politician, who hosts a party for his friends in Tepoztlán, a town near Mexico City. The gathering, however, is just an excuse to tell a fable about social tension and the decline of Mexico´s ruling class. Cast includes Fernanda Castillo, Luz Cipriota, Tenoch Huerta, Juan Pablo Medina, Camila Sodi, and Ana Serradilla. Translated by Paulina SuárezGael’s first work as director was well received by the audience and special guests; the screening generated so much expectation that many were left without a seat. Following the screening, Gael organized an exclusive party, which was attended by the many Mexican directors and members of the film industry that were present at Cannes: the Mexican delegation was the biggest in the history of this prestigious festival.
