Alexandra Hedison Presented ALOK, a Short Film That Goes Beyond the Binary, at the 23rd FICM

Filmmaker Alexandra Hedison presented her short film Alok at the 23rd edition of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), attended by actress, director, and producer Jodie Foster, as well as festival president Alejandro Ramírez and FICM founder and director Daniela Michel

Alok, directed by Hedison and produced by Foster, offers an intimate portrait of Alok Vaid-Menon, an artist and activist who challenges the gender binary and celebrates authenticity.

Hedison thanked the founders of FICM for inviting her to present her films in Morelia, and said she was thrilled to be in one of her favorite festivals in the world. “I hope we can come back soon.”

The short film was screened alongside Hafsia Herzi's feature film La petite derniere, which won the Queer Palm at that year's Cannes Film Festival. In the film, 17-year-old Fatima, the youngest of three daughters, seeks her own path while she struggles with her attraction to women and her loyalty to her Franco-Algerian family. When she starts college in Paris, she goes on dates, makes friends, and explores a new world while facing a dilemma: how can she stay true to herself when reconciling different aspects of her identity seems impossible?

“It's incredible how much has changed in such a short time in terms of the trans experience. This film [Alok] has a message about going beyond the binary, not only in terms of sexuality or gender, but in general,” explained the director.
