Alejandro González Iñárritu seeks Palme d’Or (Golden Palm)

Biutiful is a Mexican-French co-production starring Javier Bardem and written by González Iñárritu and Armando Bo. González Iñárritu has won four prizes at Cannes: the Grand Prize at the International Critics’ Week for his film Amores perros (Love’s a Bitch) in addition to the Young Critics’ award in 2000; six years later, he made the list of the Official Selection with Babel, a film that won the Best Directors award and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.

Since its founding in 2003, FICM has maintained a close alliance with the International Critics’ Week. Every year, the festival program includes films from the Critics’ Week, and the Cannes festival screens the winning films from the previous edition of FICM.

This year, 16 films from 13 countries have been selected to compete at the 63rd edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

Among the distinguished filmmakers who will compete are Bertrand Tavernier (Special Guest at FICM 2007), with La Princesse de Montpensier; Mike Leigh with Another Year; Abbas Kiarostami with Certified Copy and Takeshi Kitano with Outrage. In the Un Certain Regard section, Manoel de Oliveira (Special Guest FICM 2004) scored a spot with Angelica and Stephen Frears (Special Guest FICM 2007) will participate with the Out-of-Competition screening of Tamara Drewe.

The festival, whose jury is headed this year by Tim Burton, is considering the film Abel by Diego Luna among its special screenings in the Official Selection. FICM has collaborated with Ambulante since the traveling documentary film festival’s founding in 2005. Luna is frequently an invited guest at FICM.
