Martínez del Cañizo, Itzel

She received a bachelor’s degree in Communication at the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC). Since 2000 she has been working to develop collaborative documentary projects, exploring the audiovisual possibilities of different working methodologies. She oversaw the creation of Cuarto Proprio in Tijuana; is the Founding Director of the BorDocs Documentary Forum at the northern border of Mexico; has taught at the Autonomous University of Baja California and the Universidad Iberoamericano; works in public relations at a AIA Post & Color post-production studio and also for Polen between 2010 and 2013. She has taken a range of workshops and courses related to cinema, research, visual arts and has also taken part in the following training initiatives: DOCULAB (FICG), DOCS Forum (DOCS DF) and MoreliaLAB (FICM). She has received financial support from the Young Creators scholarship from the National Fund for Culture and Arts (Jovenes Creadres del Fondo Nacional Para la Cultura y las Artes, FONCA), as well as project development support from IMCINE and the Fund for Quality Cinema Production (Fondo para la Producción Cinematográfica de Calidad – FOPROCINE-IMCINE), among others. Her documentaries have been screened at many festivals, including three editions of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM); the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA); Ambulante Documentary Tour; the Utrecht Latin American Film Festival and the Festival Internacional de Mujeres en el Cine y la Televisión, among others. Her documentary Que suene la calle (2006) won, among other prizes, the Jury Award at the 4th San Diego Women’s Film Festival, plus a Special Mention and the Signis Award for Communication at the 3rd Encuentro Hispanico de Cine y Video Documental Independiente Contra el Silencio Todas las Voces in Mexico. Her feature documentary El hogar al revés (2014) was part of the official selection at the 12th Morelia Internatioanl Film Festival (FICM).
