Wolfgang Paalen. Cristales de la mente and Los nacimientos de Celia, a look into visual artists

Documentaries Wolfgang Paalen. Cristales de la mente, by Tufic Makhlouf Akl, and Los nacimientos de Celia, by Carlos Hagerman, were screened during the 17th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival.

The first one addresses the life of visual artist, Wolfgang Paalen, who in 1939, by invitation of Frida Kahlo, he established in Mexico. As a painter he went through several stages in his style and influenced significantly on the genesis of Abstract Expressionism. He committed suicide in 1959 in Taxco, Guerrero.
The second one shows us the 235 birth collection by Mexican artists owned by Celia Chávez.

About his film, Carlos Hagerman said that “it was very inspiring to talk about Celia. Besides being a great collector, she is a great storyteller. We couldn’t film all of the births.”

For her part, Tufic Makhlouf Akl said that “it is good to see Mexico through foreign artists’ eyes or someone who sees it differently. As the Surrealists would say: it is another level of reality, which can be found in birth figures or in art. I think it is important to see it through the artists.”
