American film critic and documentary filmmaker. Served as Variety’s chief film critic for 31 years and is currently the chief film critic for The Hollywood Reporter. Among his books are the biography Howard Hawks: The Grey Fox of Hollywood and Kings of the Bs: Working Within the Hollywood System. He has made several documentary films, including Visions of Light: The Art of Cinematography (1992), which won best documentary of the year awards from the New York Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics; Man of Cinema: Pierre Rissient (2007), and Forever Hollywood (1999), which has been playing continuously at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for more than 12 years. He also won an Emmy for writing the documentary Preston Sturges: The Rise and Fall of an American Dreamer (1990).
