Romania, guest country in FICM 09

The presence of Romania is possible thanks to the collaboration of filmmaker Christian Mungiu, who´s film Four Months, Three Weeks and Two Days won the Palm D´Or in Cannes and assisted to last year´s edition of FICM as feature film jury. He, who is considered a good friend of the festival in Morelia, was the one who suggested to program 20 Romanian films. ?This will be the first time that these films will be shown in Mexico. We expect that the attendees to FICM will enjoy them very much, we also hope Mexican filmmakers learn from this cinematographic model which has become very important?, said Michel.

Mungiu is the curator of this project and Michel herself acknowledged that it´s a great honor to have him as a collaborator in the organization of this part of the festival because he understands Mexico and knows which films will create an impact in Mexican audiences. ?It is very strange how Mexico and Romania are very similar countries, we have a bond. Their films are excellent and they will surely have great acceptance because they tell stories that can be identified as well in our cinema?, declared the FICM director´s.

She also announced that there will be a homage in honor of American filmmaker John Huston, and that it´s probable that his daughter, Anjelica Huston, will be in FICM 09. As part of the program in honor of Huston, three of his films will be screened: Sierra Madre, Bajo el volcan and La noche de la iguana, all of them filmed in Mexico.

FICM 09 will be held from October 3rd to the 11th. Michel announced that it will be the first festival in Mexico that will celebrate the 200 years of the Mexican Independence. ?A conference about films that engage in the Independence topic will be held during FICM 09. Oddly there are few movies about the Mexican Independence, but we are going to focus in the Liberation movement, how it was prepared and the films that were made about this topic. We will program tours to the main sites were the movement took place?, Michel explained.

The movies that will be screened in this section related to the Independence movement are: La virgen que forjó una patria, by Julio Bracho, El Padre Morelos y El Rayo del sur, by Miguel Contreras Torres, El Criollo, by Fernando Méndez and La Güera Rodríguez, by Felipe Cazals. Canal 22, a local TV channel, will hand FICM a documentary about Francisco Javier Mina, a collaborator of the Independece. Morelos Priest´s house will be the venue of the conferences and screenings. Eduardo de la Vega Alfaro, Angel Miquel and Julio Muñón, are confirmed as speakers.

On the other hand, Michel said that FICM hasn´t had contact with actors and producers Diego Luna and Gael Garcia, but since they are friends of the festival, they will be admitted without problems if they wish to present a film or held a conference.  She said that FICM hasn´t had news of Carlos Carrera neither, but if he wishes to present his latest film, De la infancia, the festival will gladly recieve it and organize a screening.
