Nespresso Talents 2021: Award-Winning Mexican Short Films and Feathers, Winner of the Critics' Week

As a part of the 19th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), the winning Mexican short films of Nespresso Talents 2021 competition were presented, as well as the film Feathers (2021), co-written and directed by Omar El Zohairy.

Founder and general director of the festival, Daniela Michel, said that it's a “very beautiful program because we will have all the part of the Nespresso shorts, which is a great promoter of cinema and sponsor the Nespresso Award and the Critics' Week. They're a great sponsor.”

General director of Nespresso México, Carlos Oyanguren, thanked FICM and said that it was an honor to collaborate with Daniela Michel: "For us, cinema, creativity, promoting young talent, Mexican talent, is fundamental."

Mexican director and producer, Ximena Urrutia, said that the support of the private initiative to the filmmakers “is fundamental and I believe that today, five years later, we are seeing the results; we are seeing the fruits of a contest like this.”

Later, Urrutia presented the winning short films: Mariposa, by Jorge El Villela (third place); Corazón, by Enrique Aguirre (second place), and Lunes, 3 de mayo, by Leire Aguilera Kelly (first place).

The former director of the Critics' Week, Charles Tesson, thanked Nespresso Talents and said he was happy to be back in Morelia in room 5 of Cinépolis Centro, where he has been able to discover numerous works of Mexican cinema: “There are very beautiful films that are discovered thanks to the Morelia festival.”

Cannes Critics Week director Ava Cahen said she was very moved to present Feathers, an Egyptian film “which was a real shock to the Critics Week jury. What caught our attention was not just the vision of this filmmaker, but also his framing and the narrative sense of his story. Hopefully, it’ll move you and surprise you as much as it did us."
