Interview with Raúl Ruíz

Raúl Ruíz studied law, wanted to be a philosopher, but became a filmmaker. An ardent reader and movie lover, his films are characterized by the predominance of the image over the narrative, as well as the questioning of film theories. He has made 93 films in all and has directed actors like Marcello Mastroiani and Catherine Denueve. Ruiz has lived in France since his 1974 exile form Chile. This artist and intellectual sees films as a space where the subconscious plays a fundamental role. He has won the International Federation of Film Critic’s Prize for Cofrandles, rapsodia chilena (2002); the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for ‘his lifetime contribution to the art of cinema’ in 1976; and the Caesar Award for the short film Colloque de chiens 1977.
