She was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1965. She is an actress and film director. She won the Coppa Volpi for best actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role in Two Brothers, My Sister by Teresa Villaverde. She became known internationally for her roles as Anaïs Nin in Henry and June, by Philip Kaufman, and as Fabienne, in Pulp Fiction, by Quentin Tarantino. In 2007, she was designated Unesco Artist for Peace. Her first feature film as a director, April Captains, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and has won several international awards. Her most recent work, the feature-length documentary Los ojos de Bacuri, tells the story of three generations of women of the same family, who resisted the military dictatorship of the 70s in Brazil, and to whom today Brazil offers an apology and financial reparation.
