Juan Carlos Rulfo

Mexican director, photographer, and producer. He studied communication sciences at the Autonomous Metropolitan University-Xochimilco and directing at the CCC Film Training Center, where he specialized in documentary filmmaking.

His work has received recognition at major international film festivals, including awards for Best Documentary at Sundance, BAFICI, Biarritz, Miami, Havana, Karlovy Vary, and Guadalajara, as well as five Ariel Awards. He has been a fellow of the Guggenheim, Sundance, Ford, Rockefeller, and MacArthur Foundations. He has been a visiting professor at Stanford University and has taught at the CCC and Pohualizcalli, among other film institutions and academies. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was a member of Mexico’s National System of Artists (FONCA).

His films emerge from an intimate gaze toward people and the places they inhabit. For Rulfo, the creative documentary is a way of exploring personal roots and finding an individual voice from which to explore our spaces, our emotions, and what defines us; a way of preserving the memory of territories and their inhabitants, faced with the passage of time and the transformations that threaten to erase their stories.
