This time he was present for the screening of his film The Bostonians (1984), which focuses on the Women's Movement in Boston in the 1870's. The plot follows Olive, a feminist who falls in love with Verena, a brilliant speaker, who also attracts the attention of Basil, a conservative lawyer who also happens to be Olive's cousin. The charismatic cousins compete for Vera's heart and mind.

The director commented that the film is based on the novel by Henry James, which is not as well known as his other classics because the insinuation of romance between two women offended the society of the time.
