A Tribute to Gabriel Figueroa in Hollywood

As a prelude to the exhibition “Under the Mexican Sky: Gabriel Figueroa – Art and Film” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences will pay tribute to the legendary director of Mexican photography, Gabriel Figueroa.

The event will take place on Thursday, September 17, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills and will be conducted by director Gregory Nava, special invited guest at FICM 2012. Gael García Bernal, Rodrigo Prieto and Gabriel Figueroa Flores, son of the honored photographer, will attend the ceremony.

During the tribute, extracts of Figueroa’s impressive work will be shown, such as María Candelaria (1943), Enamorada (1946), La perla (1947) and Víctimas del pecado (1951) by Emilio Fernández; The Fugitive (1947), by John Ford; Los olvidados (1950), by Luis Buñuel; Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), by Jon Siegel; and The Night of the Iguana (1964), by John Huston, for which Figueroa was nominated for an Oscar. Fragments of the films will be discussed by the invited guests.

The photography of Gabriel Figueroa contributed to the establishment of a visual culture and a Mexican national identity, but the impact of his images was felt beyond our country. In the words of AMPAS: “Figueroa's contribution to the field of cinematography is truly global in scope, and his influence is still widely felt, inspiring DPs around the world to the highest artistic aspirations."
