Gallardo Pinocchio (2022), the new film by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, had its premiere in Mexico at the 20th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM). The founder and general director of the festival, Daniela Michel, presented the film and thanked Netflix for making it possible for Pinocchio to be screened at FICM. "We have the enormous privilege, a great treasure that Guillermo del Toro has given us, with another masterpiece of his filmography," said Daniela Michel amid applause from the audience that attended the Matamoros Theater. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reimagines Carlo Collodi's classic tale of a wooden puppet magically brought to life to mend the heart of a grieving carpenter named Geppetto. This whimsical stop-motion film follows the adventures of mischievous and disobedient Pinocchio as he searches for his place in the world. The director of the festival said that Pinocchio is a film that the director dedicated to his mother: “It is a sad film, but also sweet and beautiful, like everything the great, enormous, wonderful Guillermo del Toro does,” she said. “Get ready to cry.” “FICM is a National Treasure”: A Message from Guillermo del Toro Director Guillermo del Toro addressed to the audience through a video and thanked them for attending the premiere and FICM. “I would have liked to be there, the Festival is a national treasure. I warmly thank the Ramírez Organization, Cinépolis, Daniela, and Alejandro, for all the love they have given us over the years,” said the film director. Regarding Pinocchio, he said that he planned the movie for about 15 years, "half of my career." It seeks to show audiences that "animation is art, animation is cinema, and it is not a genre made for children, but a medium that will allow us to talk about deep, painful, and beautiful things in a more adult way.” The director concluded by telling the audience to enjoy, and expressing his desire to “be with them at another festival.”
