FICM Reveals The Poster of its 21st Edition

The Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) presents the poster of its 21st edition. As it’s the tradition since the beginning of the festival, the designer and visual artist Rodrigo Toledo-Crow created the poster of this edition. It is inspired by the handicrafts made in the central and lake regions of Michoacán, particularly in the village of Capula.

"This handcrafted style of polychrome pottery can be elaborated with two techniques based on the use of detailed applied dots. Sometimes they are combined. The first one is capulineado, which, in short, is the repetition of a flower-shaped pattern composed of a dot surrounded by other dots. The second one is punteado, which involves the creation of textures by applying thousands of dots that envelope stylized designs of animals, vegetables, or simple geometric shapes. These are techniques that each artisan executes in his own way, the stroke can be thin or thick. Sometimes that leads to very surprising personal proposals," said the designer.

"The proposal I am making is a personal 'thumbnail' inspired by this type of craftwork. Simply described, it is a fish (drawn with the technique of punteado) swimming calmly in the water, blowing bubbles out of its mouth that resemble film reels, which have the basic pattern of the capulineado technique," he added.
About the decision to include a fish in the design, he explained: "I found that, although nobody is very aware of it, the name of Michoacán can have two origins. The first one: it comes from the Náhuatl 'Michihuacán', which means 'place of fishermen' or 'place where fish abound'. The second one: it's from the P'urhepecha 'Michmacuán', which means 'place by the water.'"

The 21st FICM will take place from the 20th to the 29th of October. The on-site screenings will be held in the city of Morelia, Michoacán, and the virtual screenings will be broadcast on Canal 22 and FilminLatino.
