FICM Announces the Official Selection of its 23rd edition! Since 2003, the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) has worked tirelessly to promote the work of Mexican filmmakers through it’s Official Selection, which is made up entirely by Mexican films.This year, FICM is pleased to announce that 101 films make up the competition for the 23rd edition of the festival: 15 works in the Michoacán Section (13 short films and 2 feature films), 61 works in the Mexican Short Film Section (16 animated, 14 documentary, and 31 fiction), 14 works in the Mexican Documentary Section, and 11 works in the Mexican Feature Film Section.Among the films selected to compete for the awards to be given by the jury and the audience of the 23rd FICM are En el camino / On the Road, by David Pablos, which also will compete in the Horizons section of the Venice International Film Festival; El diablo fuma (y guarda las cabezas de los cerillos quemados en la misma caja) / The Devil Smokes (and Saves the Burnt Matches in the Same Box), by Ernesto Martínez Bucio, winner of the Best Debut Award at the last edition of the Berlin International Film Festival; Olmo / Elm, by Fernando Eimbcke, produced by Plan B Entertainment, under its micro budget film finance initiative; Vainilla / Vanilla, by Mayra Hermosillo, which will compete as well in the Giornate degli Autori, a parallel section of the Venice Film Festival; and Juana, the directorial debut of the Mexican actor Daniel Giménez Cacho, who was the lead actor of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Bardo (2022). FICM’s winning short films and documentaries are automatically considered for an Oscar® nomination. We are the first Mexican festival to receive this guarantee from the Academy. #FICM2025 will be held from October 10 to 19 with in-person screenings in Morelia, Michoacán, and virtual screenings via nuestrocine.mx.
