FICM through the eyes of Nick James, editor of Sight & Sound

In it’s February edition, the British Film Institute’s (BFI) prestigious Sight & Sound magazine published an article by editor Nick James about his most recent experience at the Morelia International Film Festival. We are very happy to share a fragment of his text, and invite our readers to check out the full article on Sight & Sound’s webpage.

FICM 2012 según Nick James

Nick James began reviewing films in 1989 for City Lights, where he eventually became editor of the film section. His book on Michael Mann’s Heat (1995) was published in 2002. In 2010 the French government made him a Chevalier de L’ordre des arts et des lettres, and the following year he received the Telluride Film Festival Special Medallion on behalf of Sight & Sound. He has served on film festival juries in San Francisco, Toronto, San Sebastian, Istanbul, and at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes in 2011.

In 2012, James assisted the FICM as part of the Mexican Feature Film Jury. Afterwards, the famous British critic wrote an article for Sight & Sound titled “A collective embrace: Morelia Film Festival 2012”. It is with great excitement that we present a portion of his text:

"Over the decade, Morelia has earned the reputation of being the most hospitable festival there is". (...) Morelia remains the very best I've experienced at creating that blend of the social and the cinephile. To be at a fairly intimate party where the major programmers of all the Cannes strands and the Berlin boss are present is rare indeed. But in Morelia anything seems possible, not least because the people who look after people work so incredibly hard. May it last many decades more".

We recommend Nick James’ full article, available on Sight & Sound’s website: here. Besides sharing the reasons why he enjoys the festival, James reveals his opinion about the films he got a chance to see at the 10th FICM, don't miss the opportunity to check it out.
