The Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam at the 15th FICM

Within the alliance that the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) maintains with the Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam (CIFFR), the 15th FICM began the program dedicated to that festival with the screening of The Watchman (2017, dir. Alejandro Andújar), winner of the Yellow Robin Award 2017.

The film tells the story of Juan, a man who faces the mockery of the inhabitants of a fishing village since his wife was unfaithful and became pregnant. His job is to look after the mansion of a wealthy family and he doesn't want to leave to avoid running into her. But one afternoon the owner's son, a foreign friend and a girl from the village they just met appear without permission, a situation that gets out of control and forces him to make decisions that will affect the rest of his life.

Later, the film Double Play (2017, dir. Ernest Dickerson) was screened to continue with the program. The story is a portrait of Curaçao society through the seemingly innocent dominoes that four men play every Sunday until they take an unexpected turn: among dangerous secrets, women who make radical decisions, and a child who sees everything.

"I think the story is universal, you can situate it in a small city in Mexico, on an island in Japan, China or the United States, even because we all share the same feelings," said Ernest Dickerson about his film during the Q&A.

Daniela Michel, general director of FICM, presented the film and pointed out that viewers would see a plot in which love is the fundamental axis: "I am happy to present some friends I met at the Curaçao Festival. Thank you for coming to this film about love. I was fortunate to see this work at the premiere of the Rotterdam Festival and it speaks of a Caribbean town. This projection is very special, a pride and an honor".
