Canal 22 Presents Helguera: El Trazo de la Congruencia and María Izquierdo: Mujer y Artista at the 20th FICM

Canal 22 returns to the 20th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM). On this occasion, he presented two different documentaries: Helguera: El Trazo de la Congruencia, by Armando Casas, and María Izquierdo: Mujer y Artista, by director Gabriel Santander.

Present at the presentation was Daniela Michel, founder and general director of FICM, who thanked Canal 22 for its magnificent support in the various sections of the festival. In addition, the director Gabriel Santander spoke a few words of welcome before starting the screening of both films.

Helguera: El Trazo de la Congruencia es un documental realizado a partir de una entrevista de Armando Casas con Antonio Helguera. Narra la carrera del caricaturista desde sus inicios hasta sus últimas apariciones públicas en 2021. Durante el transcurso de la historia, se muestran las caricaturas más representativas del artista, el cual podía transmitir un mensaje sin necesidad de usar palabras.

María Izquierdo: Mujer y Artista talks about María Izquierdo, a very prominent artist of the 20th century in Mexico. During the documentary, it can be seen how María became one of the most original painters in the entire country, being one of the first feminists of her time and representing the struggle of women through art.

In the end, director Gabriel Santander had a Q&A session with the audience, where he clarified that the project's original approach was to show the life of the Mexican artist. However, all of his work and actions led the documentary to take a bit of a genre documentary form. He also shared his joy at having received the full support of María Izquierdo's family.

Finally, he shared that he decided to make the film because of his admiration for María, the director continued to investigate her life and ended up loving it, to the point of deciding to make this documentary.
