Birdman leads Spirit Awards nominations

The Independent Spirit Awards (originally known as the FINDIE or Friends of Independents Awards) was founded in 1984 with the intention of recognizing independent filmmakers. These awards are presented by Film Independent, a non-profit organization made up of filmmakers, film industry professionals and movie lovers.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) by Alejandro González Iñárritu (opening film at the 12th FICM) picked up the most nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards 2015. It was nominated in six categories: Best Feature; Best Director for Alejandro González Iñárritu; Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki; Best Male Actor for Michael Keaton; Best Supporting Female for Emma Stone and Best Supporting Male for Edward Norton. ¡Congratulations to the entire team of Birdman!

In the past, the Independent Spirit Awards was an alternative to the Oscars, but in recent years it has become a barometer of what films might be recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States (AMPAS). The 30th awards ceremony of the Independent Spirit Awards will be held on February 21 and the 87th Academy Awards Ceremony on February 22, 2015.
