Alexandre O. Philippe

A three-time Sundance Film Festival alum, Alexandre O. Philippe has developed his own brand of “cinema essay,” exploring the art of filmmaking and its practitioners. Most of his films take on the role of unpacking the most influential works of master filmmakers, and dissecting seminal screen moments. Selected past works include: You Can Call Me Bill (SXSW 2023), Lynch/Oz (Tribeca 2022), Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist (Venice 2019, Sundance 2020), Memory: The Origins of Alien (Sundance 2019), and 78/52 (Sundance 2017).

Most recently, Chain Reactions (Telluride 2024) won the prestigious Venice Classics Award for Best Documentary on Cinema in 2024, and was released globally to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. His latest, Kim Novak’s Vertigo, also had its world premiere at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, and will be released by TCM and Kino Lorber in the US later this year. Alexandre is the recipient of the American Film Festival in Poland’s Indie Star Award, and of the Reykjavik International Film Festival’s Honorary Award for Creative Excellence in Cinema. He is currently working on multiple ambitious feature documentaries about cinema and pop culture.
