Al Gore presents The Inconvenient Truth 2 / An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power at the 15th FICM

Former US Vice President Al Gore, Special Guest of the 15th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), presented his documentary The Inconvenient Truth 2 / An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power (2017, Bonni Cohen, Jon Shenk), sequel to the Oscar winner in 2007, An Inconvenient Truth (2006, directed by Davis Guggenheim), whose treatment of climate change made him an active figure of reflection in the quest to fight it.

Al Gore.

Earlier, the Nobel Peace Prize winner for his environmental activism with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gave a lecture at the José Rubén Romero Theatre, where he spoke about which societies are most affected by climate change and how technology can help combat it.

"I speak Spanish, but a little bit," Gore said after greeting and thanking theatregoers, accompanied by FICM president Alejandro Ramirez.

"The poorest people are the most affected by climate change, the ones with the least influence to defend themselves are the unprotected. In contrast, the most influential say 'climate change does not affect us,'" he said.

On that, he considered as a moral responsibility to take care of "the people who come behind us", but also the opportunity that the emerging economies must adopt renewable energies "instead of repeating mistakes".

"In the film, there is an analogy of how cellular telephony took the developed economies by surprise, but the underdeveloped ones could adapt to that change," he said.

"Mexico must vote and make its voice heard"

Questioned about Mexico's actions in environmental matters, he said that "he is a leader in proposals" and recommended that Mexicans use their vote and voice to choose responsible candidates, participate in solutions and use green options: "Send powerful signals to the industry that there are people buying green products, that puts pressure on other companies to see that there is a market in that."

Gore also said that he has trained 14,000 people in 36 sessions in Mexico and that in March 2018 he will lead another training: "young people no longer want a salary for their work, but a better place, where they value and worry for the planet ".

Social networks, help for the future

The activist said that we live a stage of environmental stability driven by technological advances such as the internet: "I think social media will help solve this problem; through them, political campaigns can be financed, which would avoid polluting companies entering with all their money in search of not changing things".

Before leaving the theatre to address the red carpet of The Inconvenient Truth 2 / An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, Al Gore asked the Morelians to "respect their beautiful structures."

This screening was possible thanks to the support of Fusion.
