Calvillo, Pablo

He graduated from a B.F.A. in Experimental Animation at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles. He worked as concept, story, previz and layout artist in diverse production studios in the Czech Republic, Australia and the United States. He collaborated in films like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), The Lego Movie (2014), Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), Astroboy (2009), and Happy Feet (2006), among others. Since 2006, his short films have won numerous awards around the world: Topializ (2006) won Best Animation at the Druid Underground Film Festival, and Mandorla (2008) won Best Video Short Film and Experimental Animation at the FIA09, Brazil. Among his recognitions are the Full CalArts Scholarship at the California Institute of the Arts, the Latin Cinemateca Award, and the Super Hero Scholarship of the Worldstudio Foundation in New York. In 2014 he received support from the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) at the 14th National Contest for Short Animated Projects. He is currently the creative director of MaliArts, an animation and design studio in Mexico City, where he has directed more than ten commercials, a short animated film and an animated mini series for Oreo Australia. His latest work, The Inksect (2016), has participated in festivals such as the Cannes Short Film Festival, in France; the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, in Spain; and the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF2016), in Korea. The Inksect is also part of the Official Selection of the 14th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM).
