Wim Wenders, The Genius who Portrays Other Geniuses

Wim Wenders recibirá el Oso de Oro honorario en el 65º Festival Internacional de Cine de Berlín (Berlinale), un galardón otorgado a figuras con trayectorias cinematográficas extraordinarias. Como parte del homenaje, la Berlinale incluirá diez películas de Wenders en su programación. El MoMA de Nueva York se sumará a este tributo y mostrará una retrospectiva de 20 cortometrajes y largometrajes del director en marzo de 2015. En el FICM nos unimos a las celebraciones con una mirada a tres de sus documentales.

Wenders es considerado uno de los pioneros del Nuevo Cine Alemán gracias a Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter / El miedo del portero ante el penalty (1972), la historia de un portero que pierde la concentración en medio de un partido y es expulsado del juego. Posteriormente, el director recibió atención internacional por Der amerikanische Freund /The American Friend (1977). La obra de Wenders ha sido premiada alrededor del mundo; en el Festival de Cannes ha ganado la Palma de Oro (Paris Texas, 1984), el premio a Mejor Director, (Der Himmel über Berlin / El cielo sobre Berlín, 1987) y el Gran Premio del Jurado (In weiter Ferne, so nah! / Faraway, So Close!, 1993), entre otros; en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Venecia ganó el León de Oro y el premio FIPRESCI (Der Stand der Dinge / El estado de las cosas, 1982); y en la Berlinale recibió el Oso de Plata (The Million Dollar Hotel, 2000) y este año será reconocido con el Oso de Oro honorario.

La obra entera de Wenders es una referencia para los amantes del cine por su visión única y por su belleza, sin embargo es difícil abarcarla toda de una sola vez. Por eso propongo un acercamiento a su trabajo a través de tres documentales en los que explora el proceso creativo de distintos artistas. A continuación, tres películas en las que el genio de Wenders se vuelve evidente por su mirada a otras figuras geniales:

The Salt of the Earth (2014), co-dirigido por Juliano Ribeiro Salgado: El fotógrafo brasileño Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado recorrió el mundo como testigo de los más desgarradores conflictos socio-políticos (en Kuwait, en Rwanda, en Sudán…), como visitante de las comunidades más autóctonas y marginadas de América Latina, y como observador de los mejores espectáculos naturales del planeta tierra. En The Salt of the Earth Wim Wenders presenta el trabajo de Sebastião en colaboración con su hijo Juliano, quien busca conocer a su padre más allá de la figura del fotógrafo. El resultado es un documental impactante que te remueve las entrañas de horror y de asombro, una obra que necesariamente brinda perspectiva sobre el mundo en que vivimos. The Salt of the Earth se presentó en el 12º FICM y forma parte de Ambulante, Gira de Documentales 2015, que estará recorriendo la República Mexicana hasta el 3 de mayo. Pina (2011): Un homenaje cinematográfico a la coreógrafa y bailarina alemana Pina Bausch, quien falleció poco antes de iniciar la filmación. Con una maestría impresionante para explotar las posibilidades expresivas de la imagen en 3D, de la danza y de la música, Wenders convierte la sala de cine en un escenario y contagia al público la pasión por la danza contemporánea, sin importar su conocimiento del tema. Este documental es hermoso, tanto que surge la tentación de compararlo con atardeceres en la playa y otros cliches sobre “lo bello”, pero es justo la imposibilidad de reducirlo a palabras lo que lo hace tan especial. Los interesados en entender de lo que escribo tendrán que verlo, de ser posible en una pantalla grande y en 3D.

Buena Vista Social Club (1999): Wenders fue testigo del resurgimiento de las leyendas de la música cubana, de ser casi olvidados a gozar de una recepción triunfal en el Carnegie Hall de Nueva York. El Buena Vista Social Club es legendario por una razón – el talento y la pasión de estos músicos octogenarios es hipnotizante y poder acompañarlos al estudio de grabación, un privilegio. Wenders filma la resurrección de una época dorada de la música cubana como si estuviera bailando a su ritmo, agasajándose con los vocalistas al micrófono, con los brillos de los metales y la tensión de las cuerdas; traduciendo la sensualidad contenida de las canciones al cine.

Estos tres documentales no son los únicos en los que Wim Wenders explora la creatividad ajena; está Tokio-Ga (1985) sobre el cineasta japonés Yasujiro Ozu y su visión de Tokio, así como sus colaboraciones con Michelangelo Antonioni (Al di là delle nuvole / Más allá de las nubes, 1995) y Nicolás Ray (Lightning Over Water / Relámpago sobre el agua, 1980), y su participación en la serie documental sobre arquitectura Cathedrals of Culture (2014) con un cortometraje sobre el edificio de la Filarmónica de Berlín.

Wim Wenders is to receive the Honorary Golden Bear at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), a prize awarded to outstanding figures within the art world. As part of its homage, the festival will include 10 of Wenders’ films in its official program. In March of this year, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) of New York will pay its own tribute to the director with 20 short films and features, while here at FICM we take a look at three of the filmmakers’ documentaries.

Wenders is considered one of the pioneers of the New German Cinema, largely thanks to his 1972 film Die Angst des Tomrmanns beim Elfmeter / The Goalkeeper’s Fear of the Penalty, the story of a goalkeeper who loses concentration in the middle of a game and is subsequently kicked off the field. The director went on to receive international attention for Der amerikanische Freund / The American Friend (1977). Wenders’ work has won awards across the globe: at the Cannes Film Festival he has won the Palme D’Or (for Paris Texas in 1984), the award for Best Director (for Der Himmel über Berlin / Wings of Desire in 1987) and the Grand Jury Prize (for In weiter Ferne, so nah! / Faraway, So Close! in 1993), among others; at the Venice Film Festival he won the Golden Lion and the FIPRESCI prize (for Der Stand der Dinge / The State of Things in 1982); at the Berlin Film Festival he won the Berlinale Silver Bear (for The Million Dollar Hotel in 2000) and will this year be awarded the Honorary Golden Bear.

Wenders’ filmography is a point of reference for film lovers, thanks to his unique vision and eye for beauty, but it’s hard to take it all in at once. For this reason we offer an analysis of three documentaries in which the director explores the creative processes of different artists. Here are three films in which Wenders’ genius reveals itself as he considers other great figures:

The Salt of the Earth (2014), co-directed by Juliano Ribeiro Salgado: Brazilian photographer Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado traveled the world, bearing witness to some of the most harrowing socio-political conflicts of our time (in Kuwait, Rwanda, Sudan...), getting to know some of the most marginalized indigenous communities in Latin America, and observing the most spectacular natural wonders of planet earth. In The Salt of the Earth, Wim Wenders presents Sebastião’s work in collaboration with his son Julian (also the film’s co-director), who seeks to gain an understanding of his father - the man behind the camera. The result is a powerful documentary that is both horrifying and profound, a work that provides us with a necessary perspective on the world in which we live. The Salt of the Earth was screened at the 12th edition of FICM last year, and is also part of the Ambulante Documentary Festival 2015, which will be touring Mexico until May 3. Pina (2011): The film is a tribute to German choreographer and dancer Pina Bausch, who died shortly before the film started shooting. With an impressive handle on the possibilities of 3D image, dance and music, Wenders transforms the cinema screen into a theater and transmits his passion for contemporary dance to his audience, regardless of their knowledge of the subject. It’s a beautiful documentary, so much so that it makes you want to make clichéd comparisons to sunsets on the beach, but in fact it is the inadequacy of words to describe the film that makes it so special. Those interested in understanding this special beauty will have to see the film, ideally on a big screen and in 3D.

Buena Vista Social Club (1999): Wenders was witness to the resurgence of these legends of Cuban music, who went from being almost forgotten by history, to a triumphant reception in New York’s Carnegie Hall. The Buena Vista Social Club is legendary for a reason – the talent and passion of these octogenarians is mesmerizing and the documentary allows audience members the privilege of following them into the recording studio. Wenders filmed this resurgence of the Golden Age of Cuban music as if he were dancing along with it, delighting in the singers at the microphone, the glint of instrument metal and the tautness of the guitar strings. This is a documentary that somehow transmits to us the sensuality of the music.

These three documentaries are not the only films in which Wenders explores the creativity of other artists: there’s also Tokyo-Ga (1985), about Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu and his vision of Tokyo, as well as his collaborations with Michelangelo Antonioni (Al di là delle nuvole / Beyond the Coulds, 1995) and Nicholas Ray (Lightning Over Water, 1980), and participation in the documentary series on architecture Cathedrals of Culture (2014), for which he made a short film about the Berlin Philharmonic building.
