FICM supports the Casa Wabi Foundation - Mantarraya Award in Locarno

Casa Wabi Foundation and Mantarraya, along with the support of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), will grant the Casa Wabi - Mantarraya Foundation Award in the 70th edition of the Festival del film Locarno, which will be held from August 2 to 12, 2017.

The prize consists of a residence of up to three months in Casa Wabi Puerto Escondido and will be awarded to a film of the competitive section Signs of Life. The jury of the section will choose as the winner a work that is associated with social commitment and which artistic qualities explore the seventh art in avant-garde ways.

The Casa Wabi program is designed to promote multidisciplinary meetings between invited residents and surrounding communities. Thus, it creates new spaces for dialogue and allows us to address the most urgent social, political and environmental challenges of today through the coexistence between artist and society. On the other hand, it gives the artist the opportunity to develop his work through interaction with other disciplines exercised by the other residents.

The winner must create a project that contributes to the development of the cultural offer of the communities on the Oaxacan coast. This exchange between the artist and the community includes, but is not limited to workshops, conferences and film screenings. Some of the artists who have participated in this initiative are Michael Joo, Santiago Sierra, Diego Quemada-Diez, Convexus, Jesper Just, Melanie Smith, Amy Feldman, Richard Wentworth, Héctor Zamora and Irene Kopelman, among others.

Through this alliance, the Casa Wabi Foundation, Mantarraya, the Festival del film Locarno and FICM join forces to continue promoting the artistic quality of every corner of the world, overcoming geographical, idiomatic and ideological differences.
