Alejandro Springall presented Sonora at the 16th FICM

Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Springall presented his film Sonora (2018) within the 16th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), with the presence of FICM vice-president, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, and the founder and director, Daniela Michel, as well as the cast of the movie.

Cast of Sonora

"This is the first public screening, I feel lucky to have assembled the most wonderful cast." The film is based on the novel La Ruta de los Caidos, by Guillermo Munro Palacio, with a screenplay by John Sayles," said Springall.

Sonora tells the events following Chinese people being expelled from Sonora in 1931, the deportation of Mexicans in the United States and the closing of their border. Twelve desperate people cross the Sonora desert in a 1929 Chrysler in the hope of finding peace in Baja California. In the eventful journey, benevolence faces brutality. Racism, greed, and paranoia become more dangerous than the inhospitable and ruthless landscape.

"There are thousands of people entering our country. They are migrants asking for help to cross in search of a dream... and this film, curiously, talks about that. I think it's a great opportunity to look at this story from that point of view," said actress Dolores Heredia.

In addition to Dolores Heredia, the cast includes Abbie Del Villar Chi, Ben Milliken, Carolina Molva, Joaquín Cosío, Flavio Medina, Erando González, Jason Tobin, Juan Manuel Bernal, Patricia Ortiz, Rafael Cebrián, Harold Torres and Giovanna Zacarías.

FICM recognizes the trajectory of John Sayles and unveils armchair

The FICM recognized the career of the American director and screenwriter, John Sayles, with an armchair that bears his name. "Well, action!" He said as he sat down.

"It is an open invitation, so you'll return to Morelia because you have a place here," said Daniela Michel.
