Luna Marán was born in Guelatao de Juárez, Oaxaca, the Zapotec community of which she is a citizen; she has held four community positions there. She has worked for over a decade in non-institutional education, where gen- der equality, diversity, and communality are transversal axes. She is a co-founder of the Campamento Audio- visual Itinerante (2012-2021), Cine Too Lab (2018), and Aquí Cine (2021-2016), among other initiatives.

Marán produced the films La revuelta (premiering in 2022), Polvo de gallo (2021), and The Blue Years (2017), nominat- ed for Best First Feature at the 2018 Ariel Awards. She is also the director of Me parezco tanto a ti (2011) and Tío Yim (2019): “one of the hidden gems of documentary cin- ema,” according to BBC_REEL, and “one of the 10 best films of 2020,” according to TimeOutMX. She is the author of El cine comunitario o ¿cómo aprender a escuchar?, Nuestro propio espejo, and ¿Quién apagará los incendios? Marán has worked as a director for the BBC, the Guada- lajara International Film Festival (2008-2014), Lila Downs, Andrés Calamaro, Esteman, and Sara Curruchich, among others.
